Despite some ups and downs as far as on the court play is concerned, the Mustangs won their last 10 games in the regular season, finishing with an impressive 15-6 record.

Lynnville-Sully basketball teams split at BGM

Despite a second half charge, the Lynnville-Sully girls’ basketball team was unable to make up for their poor first half performance at BGM in Brooklyn on Friday. They fell to the Bears 49-37.

Coach Jerry Hulsing applauded his team’s effort, despite their somewhat poor shooting performance.

“The girls played hard again tonight unfortunately we could not get any shots to fall for us. We had some good looks, but they rimmed out,” Hulsing said. “BGM’s size gave us trouble in the full court. That led to some easy baskets for them.”

Leading the Hawks’ second half attempt at a comeback was sophomore Lysandra James. She put in a phenomenal stat line of 24 points and 17 rebounds, but it was not enough to lift her team past BGM. The Hawks host Tri-County Thornburg on Tuesday night.

The Lynnville-Sully boys had a much different experience at BGM than the girls did. Despite BGM giving the Hawks a great game at Sully, this one was not close. The Hawks dominated, winning 48-27.

Coach Nick Harthoorn was proud of the team’s defensive effort.

“We struggled offensively, but our defense was really solid,” Harthoorn said. “I thought the guys stayed mentally tough when things weren’t going our way. It was great to see them fight through adversity like that.”

Junior TJ Cunningham was the only Hawk in double digits with 16 points. Senior Cale Van Wyk provided a huge effort boost on the boards with 15 rebounds to go along with eight points. The win brings the Hawks to 16-2 on the season. They host Sigourney on Monday.
