Terry Branstad to visit Newton

By JESSICA LOWE NDN Staff Writer

Former Iowa Gov. Terry Branstad will be visiting Newton on Friday.

Branstad, who served as Iowa’s governor from 1983 to 1999, will officially declare his candidacy by filing petition papers Tuesday and then continue his Leading Iowa’s Comeback campaign with a stop in Newton.

The former governor will stop in Newton at 1:30 p.m. Friday with a visit to Uncle Nancy’s Coffeehouse and Eatery, 114 N. Second Ave. W.

Branstad will be speaking in Newton about his four goals for the state if he is re-elected. Those four goals are creating 200,000 new jobs, a 25
percent increase in pay for all Iowa families, a 15 percent reduction in state government and Iowa again being the leader in education, according to Branstad’s campaign communications director.

While he won’t officially be a candidate until Tuesday, the news of Branstad seeking reelection started in October 2009 when he retired as President of Des Moines University to explore running for governor.
