 raises money for United Way

Politicians, city officials, local “celebrities” and even three Iowa State football players teamed up with Newton HyVee and United Way on Saturday for the Quarterback Sack fundraiser.

Participants bagged groceries and helped customers in an effort to raise money for United Way of Jasper County. The event nabbed about $1,100 in additional funding and went off without a hitch, according to United Way of Jasper County Executive Director Megan Crawford.

“I thought it was great event, I think all the celebrities had a great time,” Crawford said. “It was just a fun event that ran really smoothly.”

Among the sackers were three Iowa State Cyclone football players, quarterback Austin McBeth of Wayland, defensive end Rashawn Parker of Ponca City, Okla. and defensive back Thad Satre of Ogden.

State Sen. Dennis Black, who participated in the event, called upon some skills from his first job.

“I had a great time. My first job was sacking groceries in a Council Oak store. This activity on Saturday brought back memories,” he said. “The event was fantastic. Every participant was extremely enthused about it, and I would think if HyVee, Fareway or any business that would want to participate, we could certainly make sure that Jasper County met its quota on the amount of money raised for United Way.”
