Lynnville-Sully boys roll to 4-0By Daily News StaffNEW SHARON — Lynnville-Sully’s boys basketball team had four players in double-figures as the Hawks rolled to a 4-0 record with a 76-46 victory over North Mahaska on Friday. “I was really pleased with our defensive effort,” Lynnville-Sully coach Nick Harthoorn said. “We did a nice job of taking care of the basketball in the second half. It was a good win.” The Hawks (4-0, 3-0 SICL) scored 26 points in the first quarter as the team led 43-26 at halftime. Zach Stafford led Lynnville-Sully with 19 points, including five 3-pointers. Both Jacob Van Manen and Corey Gifford collected 12 points, with Gifford collecting nine rebounds. Chase Cullen added 10 points. Logan Vos dished out six assists, Cullen had four steals and the Hawks forced 19 North Mahaska turnovers. No. 8 Hawks suffer first loss at North Mahaska NEW SHARON — Lynnville-Sully’s girls basketball team struggled from the field Friday night as North Mahaska bested the Hawks in a battle of unbeaten teams, 46-24. “The team that wanted it more won,” Lynnville-Sully coach Jerry Hulsing said. “We were not in the game mentally all night.” Acacia LaRue led North Mahaska with 18 points. Tara Van Rees was the leading scorer for the Hawks with seven. Danielle Samson had six points and seven rebounds, while Brianna James added seven boards. The Hawks had 27 turnovers, and North Mahaska had 20 more shot opportunities in the game as the Warhawks led 28-10 at halftime. Hawks take fifth at Tri-County THORNBURG — Lynnville-Sully’s wrestling team had 10 wrestlers place Saturday as the Hawks took fifth at the Tri-County Invitational. Eddyville-Blakesburg won the meet with 196 points, while West Branch was second with 179. Lynnville-Sully finished fifth with 131 points, just six points behind fourth-place Iowa Valley/HLV. “The kids wrestled well,” Lynnville-Sully coach Steve Northcutt said. “For the most part we wrestled to our potential and got a few wins from pure heart.” Juniors Bill Trettin and Kyle Soderblom won championships on the day, with Trettin winning at 119 and Soderblom claiming first at 189. Freshman Levi Bennington was second at 130, sophomore Kyle Terlouw was third at 215 and junior Jesse Thompson was fourth at 145. Freshman Dave Trettin was fifth at 103, while Dakota Nelson (135), Aaron Van Dyke (140), Will Smalley (152) and Doug Cooling (285) all took sixth. North Polk girls best Colfax-Mingo ALLEMAN — After scoring 10 points in the first quarter, Colfax-Mingo’s girls basketball team managed just 18 points the rest of the game in a 67-28 setback to North Polk Friday night. Danielle Beals led Colfax-Mingo with eight points, while Nicolette Husson had six points and six rebounds inside. Hillarie Koenig added five points as the Tigerhawks shot just 10-of-42 from the field. Colfax-Mingo had 37 turnovers in the game. SFlbTigerhawks suffer close loss at North Polk ALLEMAN — Colfax-Mingo’s boys basketball team couldn’t quite rally from a second half deficit Friday night as North Polk took a 58-51 victory in Heart of Iowa Conference action. “It was a pretty close game throughout,” Colfax-Mingo coach John Borts said. “We thought we had a shot to get them at the end, but we didn’t get the rebound on some free throws two or three times, and that kind of held us off. Our guys played really hard Friday night.” Colfax-Mingo led for most of the first half, taking a 28-27 lead into halftime. For the game, the Tigerhawks were 19-of-21 from the line. Dylan Berkey led Colfax-Mingo with 15 points, while Michael Wilson added 10 points and eight rebounds. Cameron Hainer had nine points, Mitch Tomlonovic scored eight points and John Shelley had seven points and six rebounds. |
