Central Iowa Brass Quintet to open for ‘Messiah’The Central Iowa Brass Quintet will be opening for the annual “Messiah” presentation in Marshalltown this year. On Dec. 6, the quintet will perform beginning at 6:15 p.m. at the First United Methodist Church, located at 202 W. Main St. in Marshalltown. An audience carol sing will follow at 6:45 p.m., and the “Messiah” performance will begin at 7 p.m. The public is invited to attend the free concert, and a freewill offering will be taken to defray expenses. Childcare will be available for $1 an hour per child with a maximum of $7 per family. The Central Iowa Brass Quintet will play a broad range of holiday music. The group formed in 2003 and is made up of players that are associated with the Central Iowa Symphony Orchestra, which is based in Ames, and the Fort Dodge Symphony Orchestra. Members include trumpet players Jason Kirke of State Center and Larry Hansen of Dayton, trombone player Pat McFarland of Nevada, French horn player Pam Schwab of Ames and, on the tuba, Jim Kilmer of Marshalltown, who also has been a participant in the “Messiah” chorus for years.
