Newton men sentenced on child pornography charges

DES MOINES — Two Newton men have been sentenced to more than two years in prison for possession of child pornography.

On Thursday, United States District Court Judge James E. Gritzner sentenced 28-year-old Carl Conrad Carman III and 27-year-old William Allan Carman to a term of 30 months in prison and a 10-year term of supervised release following their imprisonment, according to a news release United States Attorney Matthew G. Whitaker.

Judge Gritzner also ordered each to pay a crime victim fund assessment of $100.

On July 31, both men pleaded guilty to the possession of child pornography charge. A search warrant was executed at the residence shared by the Carmans on Nov. 15, 2007, and their computer and related electronic media were seized. A forensic exam of these items revealed in excess of 150 images of child pornography, according to the news release.

The case was prosecuted by the United States Attorney’s Office for the Southern District
of Iowa and was investigated by the Newton Police Department and the Iowa Internet Crimes Against Children Task Force.

The case was brought as part of Project Safe Childhood, a nationwide initiative to combat the growing epidemic of child sexual exploitation and abuse launched in May 2006 by the Department of Justice. Led by United States Attorneys’ Offices and the Criminal Division’s Child Exploitation and Obscenity Section (CEOS), Project Safe Childhood marshals federal, state and local resources to better locate, apprehend and prosecute individuals who exploit children via the Internet, as well as to identify and rescue victims.
