Filling every nook ... Sisters of the Heart Tea Room expands with Nellie’s Nook
By MANDI LAMB NDN Staff Writer
In addition to celebrating two years of successful business in Prairie City this month, sisters Jorene and Rae Ann King recently opened Nellie’s Nook, a gift shop featuring items from Iowa businesses and artists.
Nellie’s Nook opened in August and shares the same hours as the Sisters of the Heart Tea Room, which are 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Wednesdays and 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Thursdays through Saturdays. Items featured in Nellie’s Nook include VanVeen Chocolates from Pella, Backwoods Gallery candles from Eldora, Life is A Stitch framed art, quilts by artist Robin Butler of Knoxville, coffee, kitchen utensils, seasonal items and gift items for men, women and children.
“We’re thrilled,” Jorene King said. “It has, as far as our business, really helped. People that just come in to shop, not necessarily to have lunch, come back to eat, and people come in to eat, and then they shop too. The businesses feed off of each other.”
In preparation for the holiday season, the tea room and Nellie’s Nook will remain open until 8 p.m. the first three Thursdays in December for Christmas shopping and will feature an evening “Yummy Bites Menu” from 5 to 8 p.m. Different vendors also will be on hand each week, including Essential Body Wear’s Bra Doctor of the 911 Team, Pampered Chef and Premier Jewelry on Dec. 3; Prairie Pantry, Grape Escape and Backwoods Gallery on Dec. 10; and local artisans Robin Butler of Life is a Stitch, Lori Murga of Just Beadaful and Cheri Van Houweling of Prairie City on Dec. 17.
Sisters of the Heart also will present a “Tea Party with Santa” on Saturday, Nov. 28, that will include activities and refreshments. Reservations are required, and each girl in attendance will receive a wrapped gift with her name on it.
“We’ve worked it out so Santa will know who each girl is so he can address them,” King said. “It’s going to be a lot of fun.”
Nellie’s Nook is located next to the Sisters of the Heart Tea Room and behind the barber shop on Jefferson Street in Prairie City.
