
Newton mayor to speak in Chicago about green jobsBy JESSICA LOWE NDN Staff WriterNewton will once again be in the spotlight for its green economic revival during a conference in Chicago. Newton Mayor Chaz Allen has been invited to speak about Newton’s move from a blue collar to creating green collar jobs at the Chicago Council on Global Affairs. Allen will speak Monday about “A Green Midwest; Technologies with the Future” along with Christopher Nelson, director of Global Commercial Development, Underwriters Laboratories Environment. During the conference, Allen said he’ll be able to highlight many of Newton’s strengths and the city’s commitment to developing green jobs following the departure of the Maytag Company in October 2007. “I’m just excited to share Newton’s story,” Allen said. Allen’s trip is being paid for by the Chicago Council on Global Affairs. Allen said he’ll have the opportunity to network with many national and regional developers and listen to Illinois Gov. Patrick Quinn, who is the keynote speaker for the day, Dallas Tonsager, under secretary of rural development for the U.S. Department of Agriculture and leaders in the green industry. The conference is sponsored by The Chicago Community Trust and Affiliates, Institute of Work and the Economy, Valmont and Underwriters Laboratories.
