To the Editor,

I came to Newton in 1966 to be Rector of St. Stephen’s Episcopal Church. During the years I have enjoyed friendly, competant, professional relationships with Skiff Hospital. When I retired from the parish, I became the part time Chaplain at Skiff. It was a joy to be a part of this caring healing team. After nine years, I retired from the hospital. They were some of the  most enjoyable and satisfying times in my ministry.

Now, I hear nothing but bad news from our hospital. I say our hospital because it is incorporated as a not for profit municipal hospital. We all have a stake in our hospital and in its future. We very well may need it, and we want it to be the patient centered, caring place that we have known.

As you may know, the hospital is going through a down time. We are told it has been operating in the red. However, rather than seeking the know how of its own staff, the trustees have contracted with an outside management company at an outrageous price, to solve our problems for us.

The company’s team has been installed in key management positions. A number of care givers have already been terminated, and in a few days, the axe will fall on others, and the hours will be cut for a lot more. Morale is at a low ebb and tension is palpable among the employees.

So what can you do about it? As citizens, and as people who someday may need a warm and caring place for healing, you can vote! The election is Nov. 3.

All the candidates have expressed outrage with what is going on at Skiff.  All are good people.

My first choice would be Lois Vogel, who served many years professionally and effectively as head nurse. She knows the hospital, she knows the issues, and she has the respect of the doctors and employees.

Secondly, talk to the candidates.

And finally, if you know a Skiff employee, talk to them and give them your support and encouragement.

The Rev. “Fritz” Kramer

Newton
