Seven Berg Middle School instrumental musicians were selected to perform in the 2009 South Central Iowa Bandmaster’s Association District Honor Band Festival.

The three honor bands represent the seventh and eighth grade levels and consist of 100 students each. Each band will perform a 20-minute portion of the evening concert. More than 300 students from approximately 65 schools representing 13 counties in the South Central Iowa District will participate. Among those are two Newton seventh grade band students who were selected to the honor band according to advance progress in technique books and outstanding musicianship. They include Jesse Cochran, son of Lee and Tammy Cochran, on tuba and Morgan Anderson, daughter of Chris and Jody Anderson.

Eighth grade students auditioned on scales and etudes in order to earn a spot in the District Honor Band. Local students selected include Sydney Bergman, daughter of Jim and Shannon Bergman, clarinet; Monica Mulcahey, daughter of Kathleen Mulcahey, tenor saxophone; Nick Springer, son of Dale and Loraine Springer, trumpet; Ben VanDalen, son of Gary and Lori VanDalen, trumpet; and Jennifer Ventling, daughter of Doug and Kathy Ventling, French horn.

The District Honor Band Festival will be on Tuesday, Nov. 3, at Johnston High School. The festival rehearsals will begin at 1 p.m. and conclude with a concert at 7 p.m.
