BAXTER — The Collins-Maxwell-Baxter football team couldn’t return to the field soon enough. After suffering a tough loss in the closing minutes to Bondurant-Farrar last week, all the Raiders wanted to do was play. And as soon as possible. CMB (6-1) couldn’t return to the field until Friday but did so with a bang as the Raiders jumped out to a big lead early and never looked back against an under-manned Colfax-Mingo squad. Parker Murphy threw four touchdown passes and rushed for one score in the first half as the Raiders used 34 second-quarter points to roll to a 67-16 victory over the Tigerhawks on Baxter High School Homecoming. “We couldn’t get to seven days fast enough,” CMB coach Rob Luther said. “The only way to heal that last loss was to play. And this is just what the doctor ordered.” The Raiders scored in several various ways. Murphy hit Ethan Schmidt for the first two scores of the game and then threw two more scores to Dylan Hansen in the second quarter. Murphy also rushed for a 20-yard touchdown, Hansen returned an interception for the score and Josh Benton ran in two scores as well. Other touchdowns came on a 26-yard scoring run by Josh Zeiser and Kyle Zeiser also caught a 55-yard touchdown pass from third-string quarterback Cody Schmitz. “We started slow and some of that is homecoming stuff,” Luther said. “But once the truck got rolling, it really rolled.” The victory pushes the Raiders to 6-1 overall and 4-1 in the district. They are now tied with West Marshall and Bondurant-Farrar at the top of the standings after the Trojans defeated the Bluejays, 21-14, on Friday. However, CMB still trails Bondurant-Farrar in the point system after having needed West Marshall to win by nine or more. “You hate to have to root for others and look at scores, but that is what that loss did us to last week,” Luther said. “We want to be in the driver’s seat though.” Colfax-Mingo struggled against CMB most of the night. The Tigerhawks did have success late in the game through the air. Both touchdowns scored by Colfax-Mingo were off passing plays from Mitch Larson to Dylan Berkey. The Raiders took advantage of some early mistakes by the Tigerhawks. After an early fumble by CMB, Colfax-Mingo had the ball in good field position by snapped the ball over the punter’s head on fourth down. That gave the Raiders a short field, and Murphy took advantage, hitting Schmidt from 25 yards out. Murphy connected with Schmidt later in the quarter as an eight-play, 54-yard drive was capped off by a 21-yard touchdown passing play from Murphy to Schmidt. Colfax-Mingo missed a field goal on its next possession. That allowed the Raiders to go 80 yards in three plays as Murphy ran for 11, Schmidt ran for 43 and Josh Zeiser scored from 26 yards out. Another short drive for CMB later saw the lead grow to 26-0. The Raiders scored in two plays as Murphy hit Hansen from 31 yards out. Then Murphy set up the next score with an interception he returned to the Colfax-Mingo 6-yard line. One play later, Benton made 33-0 with a short touchdown run. Murphy capped off the half with a 20-yard touchdown run and a short touchdown pass to Hansen. He finished with 50 rushing yards and 105 passing yards and did not play quarterback at all in the second half. “He made some plays out there tonight,” Luther said of Murphy. “It was as easy as just throwing the ball either. He eluded some tacklers and got the ball to our playmakers. And the playmakers made plays tonight.” With the big halftime lead, the continuous clock came into effect in the second half. That sped up the game and made it hard for Colfax-Mingo to make any kind of a comeback. Hansen scored on defense to begin the third quarter and another touchdown run by Benton made it 60-0. Larson’s touchdown passes to Berkey got the Tigerhawks on the board, but Colfax-Mingo dropped to 2-5 on the season. The Tigerhawks are 0-5 in the district. Berkey finished with 76 passing yards and 136 receiving yards. Larson threw for 113 yards and Joe Borts caught seven passes for 39 yards. “Our starting defense has packed its lunch all season long,” Luther said. “They were fantastic again tonight.” The Raiders will finish their season on the road at Albia and at North Polk in the final two weeks. The Tigerhawks will end their season at home against PCM this week and at home against West Marshall in the final Friday. “Albia will be up for us this week after beating North Polk,” Luther said. “We’ll have our hands full.” CMB 67, Colfax-Mingo 16 Team Stats C-M CMB Individual Statistics Comments
