Newton volleyball to travel to Roosevelt in first round

The 2009 regional volleyball pairings have been announced, and Newton has been assigned to travel to Des Moines Roosevelt for its first-round match.
The Cardinals will play at Roosevelt on Monday, Oct. 26, beginning at 7 p.m. The winner of that match will challenge Cedar Rapids Xavier two days later at 7 p.m. in Cedar Rapids.
In Class 2A, two area schools will face off against each other in the first round as PCM travels to Baxter to take on rival Collins-Maxwell-Baxter on Tuesday, Oct. 20, at 7 p.m.
On that same night, Colfax-Mingo will travel to Alleman to take on conference rival North Polk at 7 p.m.
Then, the winners of those two matches will play each other Tuesday, Oct. 27, in Alleman at 7 p.m. Iowa City Regina, BGM, Mid-Prairie and West Branch also are on the same side of the bracket.
Lynnville-Sully also will have to travel in the opening round. The Hawks will travel to conference rival Montezuma on Monday, Oct. 19, at 7 p.m. A win by L-S would put the Hawks in the second round where they would take on Twin Cedars in Bussey on Wednesday, Oct. 21, at 7 p.m.
