Last Call for Vegetables

Last call for vegetables! The Newton Farmer’s Market will wrap up its season with the final market of 2009 next Tuesday beginning at 4 p.m. at the usual location north of Center for Arts and Artists between West Fourth Street and West Third Street.

According to organizers, it’s been a good year for the market, which was forced to switch locations due to proposed construction near its previous spot.

“The farmer’s market was well received this year in spite of the pesky weather, and the change of location didn’t seem to keep people from coming,” said Linda Klepinger from the Centre for Arts and Artists.

In addition to the change of location, the market also saw some change in vendors, adding a popular bread vendor this season, but losing two vegetable vendors. Longtime market participants, Carl Alderman of Colfax and Delmar Emmack of Prairie City, both passed away this year.

“It’s been a huge loss for everyone,” Klepinger said. “They were really spirited people persons. They liked to educate people about the vegetables and loved to banter with their fellow vendors.”

The market is hoping to attract some new vegetable vendors for next season, Klepinger said. For now the location for 2010 hasn’t been chosen yet.

In the meantime, Jasper County residents have one last opportunity to check out the produce and art at the 2009 Farmer’s Market next Tuesday. Otherwise, they’ll have to wait until spring.
