OSKALOOSA — Nelson Pioneer Farm in Oskaloosa recently hosted its third annual Old-Fashioned Fiddle Contest as part of its Pioneer Fall Festival on Saturday, Sept. 19. The contest saw a record number of contestants, nearly double of its first two years.
“We were extremely pleased with the turnout,” said contest organizer Debbie Doty, a member of the Mahaska County Historical Society, the organization that runs Nelson Pioneer Farm. “We had 15 contestants in all.”
The contest paid out cash prizes to the top four finishers in both youth and adult categories. Winners of the contest were:
• Youth — Peter Bailey of Otley, first; Lindsay Thomas of Monroe, second; Holly Reyner of Independence, third; and Caleb Sander of Newton, fourth.
• Adult — David Bellegante of Des Moines, first; Michelle Bell of Indianola, second; Angela Lennie of Ottumwa, third; and Jerry Timm of Victor, fourth.
