Hawk softball collects
season-ending honors

SULLY — A total of eight Lynnville-Sully softball players received South Iowa Cedar League All-Conference honors announced today.
The Hawks finished the season with a record of 20-8 and tied for second with North Mahaska after a 17-3 conference mark. Iowa Valley won the conference with an 18-3 record.
Rounding out the conference standings were Belle Plaine at 14-6, English Valleys at 13-7, BGM at 10-10, Sigourney and Tri-County at 7-13, HLV at 5-15, Keota at 3-17 and Montezuma at 0-20.
Senior Jessica Kling was selected to the first team as a pitcher. She had 129 strikeouts to 26 walks with an earned run average of 1.94. Kling had a record of 16-7 this season.
In the infield, sophomore Tara Van Rees was selected to the first team. Van Rees, a first baseman, had a .315 batting average and was third on the team with 15 stolen bases.
Moving to the outfield, sophomore Taylor Van Wyk and junior Tessa Engle made the first team. Van Wyk, a center fielder, had a .325 batting average this season with a team-leading 26 stolen bases.
At left field, Engle was second on the team in four different categories — .368 batting average, 19 stolen bases, 19 RBIs and 26 runs scored.
Lynnville-Sully had two players selected to the second team — sophomores Caitlin Cross and Danielle Samson.
Cross led the team with a .412 batting average and also led the team with 23 RBIs and 13 doubles as catcher for the Hawks.
Samson, at third base this season, had a .291 batting average with 10 stolen bases.
Two other players also received honorable mention awards — freshman shortstop Carly Van Wyk and freshman designated hitter Amelia DeWitt.
Coach of the year was Iowa Valley’s Nick McCool.
