L-S Hawks to host rival Braves in district opener

• When: Today at 5 p.m.
• Head-to-head: In the second game of the season, Lynnville-Sully came away with a 14-9 win over the Braves. Josh Van Wyk, Daniel Briseno and Logan Vos each had three hits in a 17-hit gave for the Hawks. But in the second meeting of the season at Principal Park in Des Moines, Montezuma held on for a 14-11 victory. Van Wyk had three hits in that game, but as a team, Lynnville-Sully had 11 hits.
• About Lynnville-Sully: The Hawks are led by Van Wyk at the plate and on the mound. Van Wyk comes into the game with a team-leading .450 batting average. Dallas Bryan is second on the team with a .447 batting average, while Kenton Dunsbergen leads the team with 20 RBIs and 10 doubles. On the mound, Van Wyk has pitched 62 of 154 innings while collecting an earned run average of 2.82.
• About Montezuma: The Braves are led by Kirk Salnave at the plate. He’s hitting .423 with 22 RBIs while also leading the team with 19 stolen bases. On the mound, expect one of three players — Logan Johnston (3.86 ERA), Darian McFatridge (4.41 ERA) or Colin Watts (4.80 ERA).
