Newton native completes Naval Sea Cadet boot camp

JOHNSTON — Twenty members of the Central Iowa Division of the United States Naval Sea Cadet Corps successfully completed a 10 day Naval Sea Cadet recruit training boot camp at the Camp Dodge in Johnston.

The graduates include Zachary Crum (above back row, second from left), son of Jesse and Machelle Crum of Newton and grandson of Kurt and Myra Van Baale of Newton, Carol Twedt of Knoxville and Dennis and Joy Crum of Oroville, Calif.

During the highly intensive training, cadets received an orientation to military life, military heritage, Navy Corps Values, military customs and courtesies, watch standing, military drill and ceremony, marksmanship and weapons safety, physical training, chemical, biological, and radiological weapons, fire fighting, damage control, ethics, personal hygiene, a 3-hour Navy Special Warfare Crucible/Battle Stations activity, and general military knowledge. Cadets were challenged to memorize and recall Navy and Marine Corps knowledge including the 11 General Orders of the Sentry, the 14 Leadership Traits of the Marine Corps, Navy and Marine Corps hymns, officer and enlisted ranks and rates of the Navy and Marine Corps, the phonetic alphabet and the Sailor’s Creed.

Sea Cadets is an activity open to all males and females ages 10 to 17 in Iowa who have an interested in an adventure program with a military structure.
