Shakespeare at Bowl event Wednesday

Shakespeare is coming to the Maytag Bowl.

The Young Professionals of Jasper County and Arts Connection Inc. are hosting Theater for a Change at the Maytag Bowl. The theater group will be performing William Shakespeare’s “The Winter’s Tale,” a story of friendship, families and lives torn asunder under jealous suspicions of disloyalty.

The 90-minute performance will begin Wednesday at 7 p.m. with an acoustic guitar performance beginning at 6:30 p.m. at the Maytag Bowl in Maytag Park.

“The fact that it’s open to the public at no charge is such a wonderful offering that doesn’t happen very often,” said Linda Klepinger, Arts Connection board member.

Theater for a Change, which will be performing “The Winter’s Tale” is a group of actors and theater enthusiasts who aim to expand public awareness of theater throughout Iowa, focusing on economically diverse communities and neighborhoods along with creating a wide variety of affordable professional productions that enrich and entertain.

Klepinger said she’s excited about the theater group’s willingness to perform at the Maytag Bowl and the Young Professionals work to bring the cultural event to Newton.

“To have Shakespeare at the Bowl is a perfect venue and it’s free. What a wonderful gift for the community,” she said. “And the Arts Connection was so pleased to be approached by the Young Professionals to help make this event happen.”

Those attending the event are encouraged to bring lawn chairs, blankets and picnic dinners to enjoy an evening of the classics.

Klepinger said it’s been sometime since the classics have come to Newton and she hopes people from Jasper County come out to support the event.

“We haven’t had anything to do with the classics for a long time ... at least 10 years ago,” Klepinger said. “The classics are so important and should be available to everyone. The fact that the performance is free and open to everyone is the best gift of all gifts.”
