Sculpting class set for tonight
at Centre for Arts and Artists
The Centre for Arts and Artists, located at 501 W. Third St. N., will offer a “Sculpt a Tile” class in June and July to allow participants an opportunity to make objects out of clay.
Students will have an opportunity to continue to develop their wheelthrowing abilities but will also have a chance to learn at least two new skills: altering the wheelthrown form and making small editions of identical tiles. Both beginners and students with wheelthrowing experience are welcome and will be assisted in throwing a variety of forms using durable, highfire stoneware clay. Students will also learn to sculpt flat (bas relief) stoneware tiles that can be displayed like paintings or glued and grouted into a wall. Instructor Margaret Caldwell encourages students to pursue their interests, and Caldwell will assist participants with ideas for projects other than those mentioned.
The class will meet Tuesday evenings from 6:30 to 8 p.m. tonight and on July 7, 14 and 21. There will be at least two make-up sessions scheduled for Thursday evenings or Saturday mornings (and probably more) for those who miss a class. The cost of the class is $65 and two rolls of paper towels. A $10 discount is offered for those who have already taken a clay class at CAA. The class fee includes the cost for instruction, clay, glazes and firing.
