Union Street Players announces auditions
for ‘Sound of Music’
The Union Street Players is offering open auditions for its summer musical production, “The Sound of Music,” in the Joan Kuyper Farver Auditorium located in the Pella Community Center, 712 Union St. in Pella.
Auditions will be Wednesday, May 13, and Thursday, May 14, from 6:30 to 9:30 p.m. and Saturday, May 16, from 9 to 11:30 a.m. with call backs between 11:30 a.m. and noon. Auditions are open to everyone age 6 and up. No parts are pre-cast.
Written by Rodgers and Hammerstein, “The Sound of Music” is set in Austria and based on the true story of the Von Trapp Family. When the postulant Maria proves too high spirited for the religious life, she is sent to serve as governess for the seven children of the widowed naval Captain Von Trapp. Her growing rapport with the captain’s children, coupled with her generous spirit, gradually captures the heart of the stern captain, and they are married. Upon returning from their honeymoon, they discover that Austria has been invaded by the Nazis, who demand the captain’s immediate service in their navy. The family’s narrow escape over the mountains to Switzerland on the eve of World War II provides one of the most thrilling and inspirational finales to be presented in live theater.
Preview copies of the scripts and music are available for checkout from the Pella Community Library. Anyone wishing to be cast for a major role must come prepared to sing a song from “The Sound of Music.” Production dates for “The Sound of Music” are Thursday, July 30, Friday, July 31, and Saturday, Aug. 1, at 7 p.m. with a 2 p.m. matinee on Sunday, Aug. 2, all performed at the Pella Community Center’s Joan Kuyper Farver Auditorium.
