Raider girls play from behind in loss
ANKENY — A slow start did in the Collins-Maxwell-Baxter girls basketball team Friday. The Raiders trailed 11-3 midway through the first period and virtually played from behind the rest of the night. Throw in 24 turnovers and 37 percent shooting from the floor, and the Raiders ended up with a 46-40 loss to Grandview Park Baptist in Ankeny at Faith Baptist Bible College. “I felt like we were ready to play, but we got out-rebounded for the first time this year,” CMB coach Eric Padget said. “They just wanted it more than we did.” Padget said he was proud of the way his team battled back in the first quarter. Down by eight, the Raiders finished the frame on a 7-0 spurt that featured two buckets from Jordan Maher and another from Mackenzie Petermeier. The early deficit was caused by turnovers against Grandview Park Baptist’s full-court pressure. “We’re trying to be fast-paced, and you are going to have turnovers when you do that,” Padget said. “It’s when we slow down and still have turnovers that is frustrating.” The second quarter belonged to Julia Robinson. The senior post scored eight of her 10 points in the quarter and kept the Raiders in the game. After a Robinson bucket put CMB up 18-17, the Defenders (2-6) ended the quarter with four straight points and led by three at the break. Grandview Park Baptist, which won its second game of the year, got out fast and had two different leads of six points, but Maher, Robinson and senior guard Mackenzie Petermeier kept the score within striking distance on the road. Maher’s stickback followed by a Petermeier jumper made it 28-26 before a Robinson jumper cut the deficit to just one. Grandview Park Baptist eventually led by five before a Maher bank and a Petermeier pull up jumper sent the Raiders into the fourth quarter down by just one. “We battled back and kept things close,” Padget said. “I was proud of that.” The Raiders never led in the fourth quarter, but the score was tied two different times. Maher scored five more points in the period but was called for a technical foul before eventually fouling out with 35 seconds to go as the Raiders lost by six. Maher finished with 14 points, eight rebounds, five steals and two assists, while Robinson added 10 points, 10 boards and three assists. Petermeier scored 11 points and had five steals. Notes: Maher’s technical foul was not warranted in the game. After an offensive foul was called on CMB and the referees were going to take the ball out of bounds despite the Raiders having more than 10 fouls, Maher asked the officials why they weren’t shooting free throws. The ref then hit her with a technical foul and told Padget he thought she said something else. ... Abby Maher left the game in the third quarter with a shoulder injury. It was the same shoulder she has broken in the past. “She plays hard and throws her body around,” Padget said. “I wouldn’t trade that style of play.” ... The Raiders are now 5-5 on the season. They won six games all of last year.
