Sigourney jumped to the early 12-5 lead after the first quarter, but Lynnville-Sully (8-3, 8-2) came back with a 13-8 second quarter to trail by just two at halftime. “We did a good job on the defensive end keeping Sigourney off balance,” L-S coach Jerry Hulsing said. “We had our chances on offense, but we missed some scoring opportunities and had some key turnovers. We were not able to get a lead.” The Hawks shot just 32.4 percent from the field while making just 42.1 percent of their free throws. The team also committed 24 turnovers in the loss. Danielle Samson led Lynnville-Sully with nine points and nine rebounds while Cyvannah Doll added eight points. Inexperience shows in loss for Colfax-Mingo boys WOODWARD — The lack of experience reared its ugly head Tuesday night as Colfax-Mingo lost by a 42-30 score to Woodward-Granger in Heart of Iowa Conference action. The Tigerhawks (2-4, 2-4) took a 19-12 lead at halftime and coach John Borts liked what he saw in the first 16 minutes. “I thought we played a really good first half,” Borts said. “I felt pretty good about our performance. We were patient and executed pretty well. We hustled and made things difficult for their offense.” But in the second half, it was a different story. Woodward-Granger came back and took a one-point lead after three quarters on a 3-pointer at the buzzer and the Tigerhawks never quite recovered. “We came out and really just got out of our gameplan offensively,” Borts said. “Then in the fourth quarter, each bucket Woodward-Granger scored, we seemed to come back and be more impatient and not take advantage of opportunities.” Dylan Berkey led the Tigerhawks with eight points while Tim Dille and Chad Sommars each collected six points. John Shelley had a team-leading seven rebounds while Michael Wilson grabbed five boards.

Offensive woes hurt Colfax-Mingo girls in loss WOODWARD — Colfax-Mingo scored just three points in the second half as Woodward-Granger came away with a 49-15 victory in girls basketball action Tuesday. “We couldn’t put the ball in the basket,” Colfax-Mingo coach Jeff Lindsay said. “We scored three points in the second half and turned the ball over way too much. We just didn’t play very well.” Woodward-Granger led just 17-12 at the break. Brittney Borts led Colfax-Mingo (1-7, 0-6) with five points. Josie Redman and Meg Alexander each had six rebounds while Brooke Berkey took away three steals. To improve and end a six-game losing skid, Lindsay said the solution is pretty simple — make more shots. “We’re missing so many easy shots, it’s not even funny right now,” said Lindsay. “We have to get moving a little more, get the intensity turned up and get out there and compete. Right now, we’re not doing that.”
