L-S boys rally comes up short

SULLY — A 17-6 first quarter deficit was too much to overcome for the Lynnville-Sully boys basketball team Monday night in a 59-54 loss to Keota. “We dug ourselves a hole early and were unable to get out of it,” said Hawks coach Nick Harthoorn. “The boys fought hard, but we made too many mistakes at key times.” Dallas Bryan led Lynnville-Sully (4-1, 3-1) with 21 points while Zach Stafford had 11 points. Logan Vos led the Hawks with nine rebounds. After being down 11 points at the end of the first quarter, Lynnville-Sully narrowed the deficit to just 32-28 at halftime. But the Hawks couldn’t get over the hump, with Keota holding to their slim lead by outscoring Lynnville-Sully 27-26 in the second half.

L-S girls can’t overcome first half deficit KEOTA — The Lynnville-Sully girls basketball team lost their first South Iowa Cedar League matchup Monday night by a 65-50 score to Keota. Lynnville-Sully outscored the Eagles 21-11 in the third quarter by shooting 44.4 percent from the field, including 55.6 percent on 3-pointers. But after that, Keota pulled away while the Hawks shot just 20 percent from the field in the fourth quarter. The Eagles outscored Lynnville-Sully 21-8 in the final frame. Tigerhawks pull away in fourth quarter COLFAX — Colfax-Mingo outscored Collins-Maxwell-Baxter 24-14 in the fourth quarter to come away with a 54-44 victory Saturday night in boys basketball action. “It was tied 30-30 going into the last quarter,” Colfax-Mingo coach John Borts said. “We did a pretty good job of staying aggressive and getting to the free-throw line. We lengthened it out a little bit.” While the Tigerhawks (1-2, 1-2) were able to shoot 37 free throws, the team made just 16. Colfax-Mingo also collected 23 offensive rebounds. “We didn’t convert too many easy opportunities,” said Borts. “We executed well, but we didn’t make the shots by the basket. We had 23 offensive rebounds and that’s a huge number. I can’t remember the last time I had a team get that many. The problem was we didn’t convert all of those chances.” Michael Wilson led Colfax-Mingo with 19 points and 14 rebounds while Tim Dille scored 17 points. Cameron Hainer came off the bench to grab 10 rebounds. Dan Samson led CMB (1-4, 1-3) with 14 points and 14 rebounds while Jordan West collected 11 points and had five rebounds. The Raiders shot just 26 percent from the field and lost three significant players to fouls.

CMB girls rally past Tigerhawks COLFAX — Collins-Maxwell-Baxter outscored Colfax-Mingo 14-0 in the final quarter to pull out a 39-32 victory Saturday night in Heart of Iowa Conference action. “We weren’t able to sustain the lead or score in the fourth quarter,” Colfax-Mingo girls basketball coach Jeff Lindsay said. “It’s still a learning process. We were in a position we hadn’t been in all year and it showed itself a little bit. We took positive steps in the right direction from the first several games we played and we need to keep concentrating on building.” The Tigerhawks (1-4, 0-3) led by three points at halftime and pushed the lead out to 32-25 entering the fourth quarter. Josie Redman led Colfax-Mingo with 18 points and seven rebounds. “She did it within the scope of the offense,” said Lindsay. “She did a very nice job of moving without the ball and getting herself in position. The ball was being ran through several hands and she found a way to get open and the girls found a way to get her the ball.” Erika Johnson added six rebounds while Brittany Harmison collected three steals for the Tigerhawks. Eleven of the 14 Colfax-Mingo baskets Saturday night were off of assists. The Raiders shot less than 37 percent for the game and made just 9-of-21 from the foul line but did out-rebound the Tigerhawks, 33-18.
