Hawk boys hold on at home, now 4-0

SULLY — Lynnville-Sully held on for a 47-44 victory over North Mahaska Friday night to improve to 4-0 on the season. The Hawks trailed 24-18 at halftime but used a 17-8 third quarter to pull ahead. Zach Stafford led Lynnville-Sully with 16 points while Logan Vos collected eight points and eight rebounds. TJ Cullen led the team with nine rebounds. “It was a hard-fought ballgame,” said Lynnville-Sully coach Nick Harthoorn. “The guys hung tough and made enough plays down the stretch. It was good to see us protect our home floor.”

L-S girls rally past North Mahaska SULLY — The Lynnville-Sully girls basketball team saved the best of their offense for the last eight minutes of Friday’s ballgame. In the first three quarters, the Hawks had scored just 23 points and trailed by three points. But Lynnville-Sully scored 22 points and shot 75 percent from the field in the fourth quarter to pull out a 45-39 win over rival North Mahaska. “We came out after halftime and executed much better on offense and defense,” said Lynnville-Sully coach Jerry Hulsing. “We ran our offense very well to get the lead. Defensively, we did a better job of boxing out” Danielle Samson led the Hawks with 12 points while Tara Van Rees added 11. Cyvannah Doll was also in double-figures with 10 points.

Hawks seventh at Tri-County THORNBURG — Lynnville-Sully placed seventh at the Tri-County Invitational Saturday, with 171-pounder Kyle Soderblom taking top honors. Aaron Van Dyke (130) and Jason Scull (heavyweight) placed fourth for the Hawks while Bill Trettin (112), Dylan Nelson (125) and Jesse Thompson (160) were fifth. Tom Trettin took sixth at 152. West Branch won the team title with 212.5 points while BGM was a close second with 195 points. Lynnville-Sully ended the day with 93 points.
