McKenna wins in debut
BAXTER — Junior Dylan Hansen buried a 3-pointer with 15 seconds to go to give Collins-Maxwell-Baxter its first lead of the fourth quarter and senior Jordan West canned two freebies with five ticks left as the Raiders started off the 2008-09 season with a 57-53 win over conference rival Ogden, giving Mark McKenna a victory in his first game as CMB head coach.
Hansen hit three triples in the game and finished with a game-high 16 points. Jacob Baugh scored all 10 of his points in the second quarter and Seth Robinett added seven points, five steals and four assists.
“The kids kept battling and finally were able to take the lead in the last minute,” McKenna said. “The kids picked up their intensity and defensive pressure in the second half.”
The Raiders trailed by four at the break. West hit two 3-pointers and finished with nine points, while Dan Samson scored seven points and Ethan Schmidt pulled down seven rebounds. Andrew Heineman led Ogden with 10 points.
CMB (1-0) will travel to Bondurant-Farrar on Friday before returning home Tuesday with a game against Gilbert in Maxwell.

In overtime, the Mustangs took advantage with a couple of early baskets and outscored the Royals 11-5 in the extra session.
“We showed some good things and showed some not so good things,” said PCM coach Fred Lorensen. “We shot the ball well from the arc and except for the last quarter, things went well.”
Scott Bruxvoort led the Mustangs with 16 points while Rand Hazelton and Gavin Burns each collected 12. The Mustangs were helped by a 36-20 rebounding advantage, led by eight boards from Josh Fosenburg.
PCM was hot from behind the arc Tuesday, making 11 3-pointers. On the down side, the Mustangs were just 10-of-25 from the free-throw line.
Up next for PCM (1-0) is a road game Friday at North Polk.

“We struggled to put the ball in the basket, but I thought we had great opportunities at the offensive end of the floor. We didn’t really turn the ball over very much and I was proud of the defensive effort.”
Vande Wall led the team with nine rebounds, six steals and five assists while Wood chipped in six rebounds. The Mustangs were coming off a seven-day layoff after beating Grandview Park Baptist 68-29 before the Thanksgiving break.
PCM travels to Class 2A No. 6 North Polk Friday night for a battle of ranked teams.
Rally falls short for Colfax-Mingo boys
ALLEMAN — North Polk held on for a 41-30 victory over Colfax-Mingo Tuesday night in the season-opener for both teams.
The Tigerhawks trailed 24-9 at halftime but cut the deficit down to seven points early in the fourth quarter. Colfax-Mingo didn’t get any closer, but coach John Borts was impressed with the determination of his team.
“I felt like our kids played extremely hard,” Borts said. “We were doing a pretty good job defensively and for the most part, we were executing well on offense. We were just missing shots. That was the biggest difference in the game.”
Dylan Berkey led the Tigerhawks (0-1) with 12 points and five rebounds while Eric Lande and Dustin Howard each led North Polk with 10 points.
Colfax-Mingo hosts Colo-Nesco Friday night in a Heart of Iowa Conference matchup.
Tigerhawk girls struggle in loss
ALLEMAN — Turnovers plagued Colfax-Mingo Tuesday night as the Tigerhawks struggled in an 82-25 loss against Class 2A No. 6 North Polk.
“We just didn’t take care of the ball and they got many easy baskets from that,” said Colfax-Mingo coach Jeff Lindsay. “They’re a very good team — they’re fast, athletic, know how to jump and they know how to score.”
Colfax-Mingo trailed 44-9 at halftime, but Lindsay said his team didn’t quit.
“The girls played hard and didn’t show signs of quitting,” said Lindsay. “We did do some things offensively, and we found out if we stick to what we’re able to do, we’ll get ourselves some opportunities. We found out how hard we have to play to be a good team.”
Erika Johnson led the Tigerhawks (1-2) with seven points. Josie Redman led the team with six rebounds while Brittney Borts collected five.
