Defense keys girls to blowout victoryBy BEN FROTSCHER NDN Sports Writer
SULLY — Having a week off from games due to the Thanksgiving break showed for the Lynnville-Sully girls basketball team. The Hawks shot just 28 percent from the field and 25.8 percent from the free-throw line (8-of-31), but it was swiping away 19 steals and causing 37 turnovers that helped Lynnville-Sully come away with a 45-26 victory over Tri-County on Tuesday night. “Defensively, we got out and did what we needed to do,” said Lynnville-Sully coach Jerry Hulsing. “We caused a lot of turnovers and had ball pressure. We were a half step slow on about four or five rotations that I would like to see us get to, but we really struggled putting the basketball in the hole — that was the biggest thing for us tonight.” The Hawks never trailed the entire ballgame, jumping to a 10-2 lead after the first quarter. After shooting 2-for-2 at the free-throw line in the first frame, the Hawks struggled the rest of the game. Lynnville-Sully missed its first 11 free throws of the second quarter as Tri-County made a run. The Trojans narrowed the deficit to 12-11 on a Gloria Steinke jumper, but the Hawks came back when the free throws started to fall. A 9-0 run late in the second quarter, along with making 5-of-7 free throws, helped the Hawks take a 24-13 lead at halftime. “We struggled to shoot the ball, period,” said Hulsing. “Free throw shooting was really bad from the floor — we shoot better normally. We were just trying to go too fast and we weren’t in sync. We never got in a rhythm offensively.” The lead grew to 30-13 midway through the third quarter on a Brianna James putback that capped off an 18-2 run. James led the Hawks with a double-double, collecting 17 points and 14 rebounds. Now 3-0 overall, the Hawks travel to Iowa Valley Friday night. at Sully Lynnville-Sully 45, Tri-County 26 Scoring by quarters T-C 2 11 4 9 — 26 L-S 10 14 8 13 — 45 Lynnville-Sully individual statistics Brianna James 7-11 3-8 17, Tessa Engle 3-7 1-4 9, Mariah Terlouw 3-9 1-2 7, Danielle Samson 3-9 1-10 7, Cyvannah Doll 1-12 2-2 5, Tara Van Rees 0-10 0-2 0, Caitlin Cross 0-1 0-0 0, Taylor Van Wyk 0-1 0-2 0, Abby Van Wyk 0-0 0-1 0.
