Tigerhawks upset No. 11 Twin CedarsPLEASANTVILLE — What a difference one night can make. After scoring just nine points total against a tough Carlisle team Monday night in the Pleasantville Tournament, the Colfax-Mingo girls basketball team came back Tuesday night with an upset. Colfax-Mingo held Twin Cedars to just three second-half points, and Meg Alexander hit the front end of a 1-and-1 with 0.5 seconds left as the Tigerhawks rallied for a 27-26 win over the Class 1A No. 11 Sabers. The Tigerhawks trailed 23-14 at halftime, but coach Jeff Lindsay said his team responded. “At halftime, I challenged them,” said Lindsay. “The other team had one girl that had 18 of their 23 points at halftime. We knew what she was going to do, and in the second half, we held her to two points and the other team to three points. They didn’t have a field goal in the second half.” Heading into the fourth quarter, Colfax-Mingo trailed just 25-24 until a Brittney Borts shot gave the Tigerhawks a lead. With 25 seconds left and the game tied, the Tigerhawks missed their shot attempt and Alexander found her way to the rebound before getting fouled. Alexander made the first free throw before intentionally missing the second to give Colfax-Mingo the win. Lindsay Hoehns of Twin Cedars led all scorers with 23 points but scored just two points in the second half. Lindsay said a diamond and one defense frustrated Hoehns in the second half, eventually leading to her fouling out. “The whole third quarter, Brittany Harmison was in her jersey,” said Lindsay. “Brittany was probably giving up seven or eight inches in height, but she’s just a tenacious little ball player. She’s not going to back down from anyone.” Colfax-Mingo was led by eight points, six rebounds and three blocks from Josie Redman. Harmison snatched away seven steals. The Tigerhawks (1-1) are off until a Dec. 2 road game at North Polk. Hawks beat BGM BROOKLYN — An 18-2 lead after the first quarter was more than enough for the Lynnville-Sully girls basketball team Tuesday night as the Hawks took a 52-33 victory over BGM. “We did a pretty good job defensively of forcing BGM out of their offensive rhythm,” said L-S coach Jerry Hulsing. “Our pressure did a good job of forcing some turnovers.” The Hawks jumped to the lead early due to the 3-point shot, with L-S shooting 43 percent behind the arc in the first quarter. The Hawks made nine 3-pointers in the game. Tara Van Rees led L-S with 15 points while Cyvannah Doll added 13. Mariah Terlouw and Danielle Samson each collected 10 points while Brianna James grabbed 11 rebounds. The Hawks held a 44-26 advantage on the boards. Now 2-0, Lynnville-Sully is off until a Dec. 2 home game with Tri-County.
