Note to supervisors: You may pay online
Jasper County Assessor John Deegan got a rather cool reception at the board of supervisors meeting Tuesday.
The reason? He was there to ask the supervisors to pay taxes on the county-owned farm ground, nearly $6,000 worth of taxes.
“This is one of those things that got overlooked,” Deegan said. “Land that is owned by the county which is not open to the general public is taxable.”
Deegan said he was holding off on asking for the taxes on county farm ground because the Jasper County Care Facility was to be sold but said he was giving the supervisors no special breaks on the taxes.
For 2007-08 taxes, payable Sept. 2008 and March 2009, the county owes $5,858 on six separate parcels of farm ground.
