Jasper County residents won big at Iowa State Fair

Jasper County residents have been busy this summer entering a variety of contests at the Iowa State Fair. Here is rundown of some of the local winners as reported to the Daily News by readMedia Newswire. The first part of the list appeared Monday. • Dale Berkenbosch of Prairie City took home several ribbons in the Foods Made With Honey contest, judged Aug. 10 at the Iowa State Fair, including: first place for his banana nut bread; third place for honey date nut bread; second place for his honey pumpkin raisin bread; third place for his honey zucchini bread; third place for honey nut bread; and third place for honey poppy seed bread in the Quick Bread Other Than Named category. • Brad Van Baale of Monroe received fourth place in the Worthy Item Not Listed in the Animal Equipment category of the Heritage Exhibits division displayed at the Farm Bureau Pioneer Hall. Debra Johnston of Baxter received third place for her vase; Van Baale received second place for a mustache cup; Van Baale received fourth place for a carnival glass piece and second place for an Indian artifact; Johnston received second place for a framed print; Gerald Van Zante of Monroe received first place in the Locks and Keys category. • Taylor Wilson of Colfax showed the champion Dorset ram in the FFA Breeding Sheep Show, judged on Aug. 8. Kayln Halferty of Colfax took the reserve champion Dorset ram honors. Taylor Wilson also showed the champion Dorset ewe. • Stephanie Bollhoefer of Newton received third place for her afghan in the Fabrics and Threads Hand Knitting competition, judged prior to opening day at the Iowa State Fair. • Tim Peter of Prairie City claimed second place in the mandolin category in the State Fair’s string instrument contest. • Sam Hall of Baxter claimed first place in the under age 17 category of the Fiddler’s contest, judged Aug. 10. Lindsay Thomas of Monroe took third and Caleb Sander of Newton placed fourth in the same category. Jim Christensen of Newton placed second in the age 50 and over category. • Delores Tyler of Prairie City placed third in the traditional design dollhouse category of the Dollhouses and Miniature Rooms contest. Tyler also received a second place award in the theme design category. • Joanne Thomason of Newton won the prestigious Sweepstakes award in the Fabric and Threads Hooked Rugs contest, judged prior to the start of the Iowa State Fair. Thomason also placed first in the Originals or Adaptations category, and Betty Wright of Newton placed third. Susan Bryan of Newton placed second and Judith Yokiel of Newton took third in the Rug: Mat size, 5 cut or larger category. • Fern Nelson of Kellogg took second place in the Toddler-Jumper or Jumpsuit category of the Fabrics and Threads Clothing Construction competition, judged prior to the opening of the fair. Marilyn Samson of Prairie City places second in the Men or Boys-Knit Shirt category. • Geraldine Bishop of Mingo placed second in the Guest or Tea Towels category of the Fabrics and Threads Embroidery competition, judged prior to the opening day of the fair. • Christine Opfer of Colfax took second place and Mary McCumber of Newton placed third in the My First Quilt category in the Fabrics and Threads Quilting competition. Lynda Lynn of Newton placed fourth in Wall Quilt, Mixed Technique category, and first place in the Wall Quilt, Scrap category. • Rodney McCumber of Newton received an honorable mention for his entry in the Fabrics and Threads Tatting competition. • Deana Wright of Colfax placed second with her Spiced Pasta entry in the Pasta Sensations competition Aug. 9. • Dale Berkenbosch of Prairie City received an honorable mention for his Zucchini Dish in the Iowa Magazine All Iowa Dish competition Aug. 8. Entries must contain only Iowa grown, raised and produced ingredients. • Dawn Hull of Newton took second place for her Portabello mushrooms in the Dried Vegetables category of the New City Market Dried Foods competition, judged Aug. 9. Randy Berkenbosch of Prairie City took a third place with his dried pears in the Dried Fruit category. • Deana Wright of Colfax earned third place and $25 for her Bean, Bacon and Cheese Potato Topper entry in the Tater Toppings competition, judged Aug. 8. Entrats were challenged to create unique and delicious toppings to be used on baked potatoes. • Geraldine Bishop of Mingo received second place for an embroidered tea towel, and Marilyn Samson of Prairie City received fourth place for an embroidered pillowcase in the seniors division of the Fabric and Threads contest, judged prior to the start of the fair. Bishop also placed fourth in the Ruth Van Den Baard Award, given to exhibitors who are at least 80 years old when the item they submitted was completed. • Marilyn Samson of Prairie City received a third place award for her blouse in the Business Attire category of the Women’s Clothing contest, judged prior to the start of the fair. Fern Nelson of Kellogg placed second in the Casual Wear category. • Deana Wright of Colfax placed third in the non-baked items category of the Trust Your Recipe to Gurleys competition for her dipped cashews. • Linda Isley of Baxter placed third in the desserts category of the Creative Cooking with Fresh Sweet Corn competition for her Harvest Cake, judged Aug. 9 at the Iowa State Fair. Isley also received an honorable mention for her BBQ Beef Quesadilla in the Taste of Honey Challenge competition. • Randy Berkenbosch of Prairie City took second place in the Grandpa’s Favorite Ice Cream contest with his Maple-Nut Ice Cream. • Deana Wright of Colfax placed first in the dessert category of the Puckerbrush Potluck contest with her Pecan Pumpkin Pie. The competition showcases favorite dishes-to-share. Judging is based on taste, appearance and presentation, and how the entry encourages a sense of community. • Gavin and Brevin De Raad of Prairie City placed third in the Age 1, Most Alike category of the annual Twins, Triplets and More contest at the Iowa State Fair, judged on Aug. 7. Luke and Elsie Nikkel of Newton received a third place award in the Age 1, Least Alike category; Kinser and McKynna McDermott of Newton placed second in the Age 2, Least Alike category; Megan and Molly Lovan of Newton placed second in the Age 4, Most Alike category; and Tabetha and Paige Gathercole of Mingo placed first in the Ages 12-17, Most Alike category. • Jessica Fuller of Prairie City placed third in the Turkey Calling Contest judged Aug. 7 at the Farm Bureau Pioneer Hall. • Dale Berkenbosch of Prairie City tied for the Reserve Sweepstakes award in the Ivy’s Quality Quick Breads and Muffins contest, judged Aug. 3 prior to the Iowa State Fair. He received third place in the Fresh Fruit category; first place for his Poppy Seed Bread; and first place for his Pumpkin Raisin bread. Barb Miller of Prairie City received second place in the Flavored Biscuits category, and third place in the Biscuits category, first place in the Cheese Bread category, third place in the Cake Mix Bread category; third place in Quick Bread other than named, and second place in the Nut Bread category; Phyllis Olson of Newton placed first in the Corn Bread category; third in the Pumpkin (with nuts) category; and second place in the Cake Mix Bread category. • Phyllis Olson of Newton took third place for her Angel Food Cake in the Smile in Every Aisle Cakes contest, judged Aug. 5. • Kathleen Young of Sully took first place for her Hamburger Buns in the King Arthur Yeast Rolls contest, judged Aug. 3. Phyllis Olson of Newton took third place for her Butterhorn Rolls. • James Breckenridge of Monroe took first place in the Places category in the Adult Division: Black and White Photography Salon competition, judged prior to the Iowa State Fair. Breckenridge also received an honorable mention in the Places Outside Iowa category. Eric R. Cantrell of Newton received an honorable mention in the Plants category
