CMB gets win on senior night
COLLINS — Freshman Jessica Robinett fanned 15, Jordan Maher got the offense rolling with an RBI double and Jackie Coughenour scored one run and knocked in two more as the Collins-Maxwell-Baxter softball team ended its regular season with a 3-0 win over South Hamilton on Monday. Robinett stole the show on senior night as she allowed just four hits and struck out 15 in a complete-game victory. The Raiders belted just four hits, but it was enough to find the win. The Raiders started the scoring in the first after Coughenour reached on an error and then scored on Maher’s RBI double. Two unearned runs for CMB (16-12) followed in the second as Danielle Hoskins reached on a two-out error before Emily McQuiston doubled and Coughenour cleared the bases with a two-run single. Robinett didn’t need any more runs than that but was forced to pitch around a bases-loaded jam in the seventh. South Hamilton put three on following a walk, a bloop single and an error, but Robinett struck out the next three hitters to end the game. CMB ends the season with a 12-6 conference record. The Raiders will face conference foe Colfax-Mingo on Thursday in the first round of the Region 7 Tournament. The game begins at 7 p.m. in Colfax. Saturday: CMB had no trouble advancing to the championship game of its host tournament Saturday but did not come ready to play against Madrid in the title contest. CMB cruised past Northeast Hamilton, 18-5, in the opener as Brittany Moorman got her first career varsity win. She pitched three innings, gave up one earned run on six hits and struck out two. The Raiders had eight hits at the plate but also walked 10 times and got hit once. Hannah Paul had two hits while six others recorded one hit apiece. Abby Maher, Emmeline Huffaker and Chelsi Birchmier each scored three runs. Birchmier led the team with five RBIs and she also scored two runs. In the second game, Madrid took it to the Raiders early in a 6-1 win. The Tigers plated two in the top of the first and scored two more runs each in the third and fourth innings. Jordan Maher singled with two outs in the CMB portion of the first inning. She stole second and third and eventually scored on a throwing error by the catcher. The Raiders threatened in the seventh inning with a bases-loaded situation but failed to score. Robinett took the loss as she gave up three earned runs on eight hits in seven innings. Jordan Maher had one of the team’s four hits and only run. Jen Coughenour had two hits while Zeah Peterson also singled. C-M loses 1-0 in softball JEFFERSON — The Colfax-Mingo softball team gave up one run in the bottom of the first inning Monday night to Jefferson-Scranton. That run ended up being the difference as J-S won the Heart of Iowa tilt, 1-0. Devanie Fahrney took the loss on the mound for the Tigerhawks, giving up one earned run and six hits while striking out four. “Devanie pitched a good game tonight, spreading six hits out,” C-M coach Bryan Poulter said. C-M only managed to record three hits on the night, though 10 runners did get on base thanks to walks. “We failed to move a runner past third,” Poulter said. “Their pitcher did a nice job mixing up her pitches, and we weren’t able to dig in and take good cuts.” The Tigerhawks were unable to score in a key fifth inning situation. “I had us put a bunt down with the bases loaded,” Poulter said. “I wanted to force their defense to make a play, and they did. Give credit to them.” C-M wraps up its regular season tonight at West Marshall, then starts the playoffs at 7 p.m. Thursday by hosting Collins-Maxwell-Baxter. C-M boys win 2-1 over W-G GRANGER — Colfax-Mingo’s combination of Nolan Daft and Preston Wilson proved too much for Woodward-Granger Monday night. The duo was responsible for two runs as C-M took a 2-1 Heart of Iowa road win. The win improves C-M to 12-8 (10-6). Daft singled to lead off the game, then took second on a passed ball. A single by Wilson scored Daft to make it 1-0. W-G responded with two hits and a run in the bottom of the first to tie the game. The score remained tied until the top of the sixth. Daft took first after being hit by a pitch and scored on a double by Wilson for the final 2-1 tally. Scott Smith took the win on the hill for the Tigerhawks, striking out eight and allowing three hits with one walk and one earned run over seven innings. W-G only had one hit after the first inning, while C-M had two hits after the first. C-M makes up a game at Grandview Park Baptist Wednesday at 4 p.m. at Grand View College, then hosts Collins-Maxwell-Baxter in the evening at approximately 7:30. |
