Newton Baseball Hall of fame

Former Newton standouts and brothers Bill and Larry Nelson were inducted into the Newton Baseball Hall of Fame this past Saturday during the Cardinal Invitational at Eversman Field. Bill Nelson was a member of the 1969 team that qualified for the state tournament. He lettered in four sports at Newton and then lettered in football and baseball at Wartburg College. He has taught and coached in Iowa for 33 years and is a member of the Iowa Football Coaches Hall of Fame. He is currently the head football coach at Skyview High School in Thornton, Colo. Larry Nelson also was a part of the 1969 state qualifying team with his brother and he also lettered in baseball at Wartburg. He played 11 years with the Newton A’s summer town team and spent many years coaching Little League, Babe Ruth and girls’ softball teams in Newton. Jared Modlin was inducted into Newton’s Baseball Hall of Fame this past Saturday during an annual event at the Cardinal Invitational. Modlin, who could not be present for the induction, was well represented by Newton youngster Ty Arguello, who is Modlin’s nephew. While at Newton, Modlin helped guide the Cardinals to the 2000 state tournament. He was a two-time all conference outfielder and also made the all-district team his senior year. He played baseball in college at both Southwestern Community College and then Longview Community College before graduating from the University of Northern Iowa in 2007 with a degree in Economics. He currently works for Vocon-Housby in Des Moines.
