After the vows are read, the rings are exchanged and the perfect kiss captured on film, the one wedding tradition that stands out is the ceremonial cutting of the wedding cake. For any bride, her wedding isn’t perfect unless the cake is not only delicious but reflects her style and personality on her big day. Whether it’s one tier or two, square or round, Krista Schroeder of Colfax can not only make the cake scrumptious, she can make it beautiful and chic to help make any wedding day special. “Because of my art background I wanted to do something artsy,” said Schroeder of why she teamed up with Tom Carmichael, owner of Indulgent Moments Specialty Cakes. Schroeder, who hates to cook but loves to bake, decided to try something new and went to work finding a bakery for work. Carmichael suggested she work with him as a franchisee with Indulgent Moments and serve a part of Central Iowa he was unable to with his present business. “He had a lot of integrity and I liked how he ran his business. He has good business sense,” Schroeder said of why she decided to join the Indulgent Moment team. From her Colfax home, Schroeder bakes and decorates hundreds of cakes from birthday to weddings and everything in between. Schroeder said her favorite part of the process is designing that special cake for an individual. “I love when people come to me and say ‘I have a certain idea, but I don’t know exactly what I want.’ Then I think of all the ways I could decorate a cake and I like the challenge of that. ... I just get challenged to think outside of the box.” And thinking outside the box she does. All of Schroeder’s cakes are made from scratch with fresh ingredients and she uses a real butter cream frosting that is the trademark of all Indulgent Moment cakes. “Our frosting is made of butter not powdered sugar,” she said. “(The frosting) gives the cakes a little shimmer. They glisten. There’s something very classy about it.” Schroeder said using butter cream frosting adds an additional challenge to cake decorating. “Very few people work with real butter cream frosting because of the way you have to handle it,” she said. The extra work pays off in the end with exquisite cakes. “It’s nice to see what you’ve accomplished,” Schroeder said of the finished works of edible art. “When you finish it and set it up at the reception hall and it’s so pretty and everyone is ‘oohing’ and ‘awing’ it’s just neat.” For more information about Indulgent Moments and Schroeder’s franchise, call her at (515) 674-9097 or visit www.indulgentmoments.com.
