Presidential candidate Thompson to visit Sully
Special to the Daily News
Gov. Tommy Thompson will visit Sully next week, marking his second visit to Jasper County. Thompson will be in Sully on Monday on his Common Sense Solutions Tour delivering his common sense message directly to voters. The Breakfast with Tommy will start at 10 a.m. at the Coffee Cup Cafe, located at 616 Fourth Ave. #113. There is no charge for the event and the public is invited to attend. Thompson recently won the Linn County straw poll with 33 percent of the vote, defeating every other candidate on the Republican ticket. Linn County is the second largest county in Iowa, and is considered by many to be a bellwether county. Thompson’s victory occurred just days before the Strategic Vision poll was released reporting that he is in fourth place among announced candidates in Iowa. “I am very excited to return to Sully with my Common Sense Solutions Tour,” Thompson said. “The recent polls show that Iowans are looking for a candidate with common sense solutions and that’s what I’m bringing. I’ve spent a lifetime identifying problems, forming solutions and getting things done.” As governor, Thompson was able to pass the first county welfare reform program in a state controlled by Democrats. He also created the first school choice program in the country, which has given students from low income families a real chance to get into college. For example, Messmer High School, in downtown Milwaukee, where the majority of students are on subsidized school lunch programs, has a 98 percent graduation rate with 90 percent of the students heading off to college. “These are just a couple of examples of what I have accomplished as governor,” Thompson said. “The voters want a candidate with ideas, and that is what I am bringing to the voters every week when I am in Iowa. I am taking my commonsense solutions straight to the people.”
