McCain to visit Newton Saturday

Presidential hopeful Sen. John McCain (R-Ariz.) will be in Newton Saturday as part of another visit to Iowa. McCain plans several stops throughout central Iowa today and Saturday, including a breakfast town hall meeting at 8:45 a.m. Saturday at Newton DMACC. McCain’s visit comes on the heels of his announcement that he, along with fellow Republican candidate Rudy Giuliani, plans to skip the GOP straw poll slated for August in Ames. McCain's national campaign manager, Terry Nelson, said the senator would focus instead on Iowa’s caucuses next winter. “It is clear that the Ames straw poll will not be a meaningful test of the leading candidates’ organizational abilities, so we have decided to forego our participation in the event,” Nelson said in a released statement. McCain’s other central Iowa stops include:

  • Pella Town Hall Meeting Today at 11:45 a.m. at the Tulip Toren in Central Park on Franklin Street and Broadway Street in Pella.
  • Waukee Picnic in the Park Town Hall Meeting today at 5:30 p.m. at Centennial Park, 1255 Warrior Lane in Waukee.
  • Urbandale Town Hall Meeting Saturday at noon at Des Moines Christian School, 13007 Douglas Parkway in Urbandale.
