NHS seeking Hall of Fame nominations

It’s Newton High School Hall of Fame time. Nominations for the seventh class of the NHS Hall of Fame are being taken.

This is an all inclusive Hall of Fame, not an athletic Hall of Fame. Outstanding former Newton High athletes may be nominated, but the NHS Hall of Fame is to recognize Newton High graduates from all walks of life.

Nominations are being asked for from NHS alumni and Newton community members.

Nomination forms for the Hall of Fame are online on the Newton Activities/Athletics website. This website can be located by going to the Newton Community School District website, then clicking on “Our Schools,” then clicking on “High School.”

Nomination forms and information on the 2020 NHS Alumni Brunch can be obtained at the Newton Senior High School office. Applications for nominee consideration this year are due on March 31, 2020.

For questions regarding the nomination process, contact Newton Activities Director Ryan Rump at rumpr@newton.k12.ia.us or 641-792-5797.

The purpose of the Newton High School Hall of Fame is to honor individuals or organizations that have made exceptional achievements in their field, significant contributions to Newton High School or unique contributions to their communities at the local, state, national or international levels.

Hall of Fame inductees will serve as examples of the quality education that NHS provides and as role models for current students and staff to achieve success in their chosen fields.

Newton alumni who have distinguished themselves in the fields of athletics, arts (including authors, musicians, visual artists and journalists), business, education (at any level), government, science or service (non-profit or religious) are eligible for nomination. Additional categories for consideration are retired staff from the Newton Community School District, and any individual or organization that has made outstanding contributions to the success of Newton High School.

Until 2014, there was an informal hall of fame at Newton. With the guidance of former NHS athletic/activities director Scott Garvis, the NHS Hall of Fame was formed.

Alumni must be graduates from 2005 or earlier. Staff must be retired at least five years and have worked for the school for a minimum of 10 years, and the community organizations and individuals must have served NHS for 10 or more years or made major or significant contributions to the school.

A committee will review the nominations, and completed nomination forms will be kept on file for five years. Those selected for induction into the Hall of Fame for 2020 will be honored and recognized at the annual alumni breakfast scheduled for June 13.

If you know of a former NHS student who has or is making outstanding contributions to his or her chosen field, nominate them for the 2020 NHS Hall of Fame class.

It’s also spring time, at least in the eyes of this sports journalist. I know the first day of spring is March 19 but ... we’ll begin gathering schedules and getting ready to contact coaches for the high school spring sports previews next week.

Track practice began a week ago. When I would show up early for the basketball games at Newton High, track athletes were running the halls and stairs. The short indoor track season opens on March 9 for area high school athletes.

Practices for girls and boys golf, girls and boys tennis and boys soccer begin March 16. Girls soccer practices join the fray on March 23. Come the week of March 30 we take off for the spring sports run.

The Newton Daily News will begin running all-conference basketball honors as the room allows starting Thursday with the Little Hawkeye Conference girls.

Once all the conference teams are through with postseason play, we can release the full teams.

All-state basketball honors will be coming out the next couple of weeks following the conclusion of the state basketball tournaments.
