Price claims 33rd at 2A state bowling tourney

WATERLOO — Abby Price was one of the three Musketeers at Tuesday’s Iowa Class 2A State Girls’ Bowling Tournament. Newton High’s Price and two other girls were the only individuals bowling as the rest of the 51-bowler girls’ field were on teams at the tournament.

Price, a junior, was in her first high school state tournament. She along with Oskaloosa senior Nikki Parlet and Denison-Schleswig senior Cassidy Bradley bowled together on lanes 9 and 10 at Cadillac XBC in Waterloo.

“It was exciting but really different. We had to wait until the teams were finished to find out how we did as individuals. There were only three of us girls bowling not on teams,” Price said. “There was a lot of cheering going on during the tournament.”

Price said she was disappointed and happy with her first state tournament performance. She rolled a 329 series with games of 174 and 155 to finish 33rd overall. It wasn’t her best score.

“Yes, I was disappointed at first but then you have to think of it that not everybody gets to state so just making it there was awesome,” Price said. “Even though I didn’t do so well, it was alright.”

Abigail Williams, a senior from Waterloo East, was the 2A individual champion with a 493 (257-236). Williams led her team to the 2A team championship as Waterloo East combined for a 3,058 score.

The girls’ 2A runner-up individually was senior Lorna Niedert of West Delaware with a. 473 and her team finished third at 2,777. Keokuk was the team runner-up with a 2,957.

“Abby really did great. It’s always difficult bowling individually when there are teams bowling together at the same time,” Newton head bowling coach Christie Hughes said. “It was great seeing those three girls cheer for each other. I’m super proud of Abby.”

Parlet finished 14th with a. 368 (200-168) and Bradley was 27th at 339 (171-168).

The Iowa Girls Coaches Association and Iowa High School Bowling Coaches Association released the 2020 Bowling All District Teams on Monday. Price was named to the Class 2A Girls All-West District First Team.

“Picking up your spares and just knowing where to stand and what to do at times are things I learned about today,”Price said. “I know what to work on to get back but next year I want us to make it as a team.”

Hughes said during the tournament, she reminded Price to go out and have fun then to remember to relax, take a deep breath and focus on what she knew. She said they made a couple adjustments on where to stand and decided to switch to a different ball.

Price has been the top bowler for the Newton girls’ bowling team three straight years.
