Officials say 2 Iowa National Guard units headed to Africa

JOHNSTON — Two Iowa Army National Guard units are being deployed to Africa as part of Operation Enduring Freedom, officials said.

About 90 soldiers from Troop C, 1st Squadron of the 113th Cavalry Regiment in Le Mars already are training with 40 from the squadron’s Troop A, which is based at Camp Dodge in Johnston, said Col. Michael Wunn on Wednesday.

Send-off ceremonies are scheduled for June, and then the soldiers will head to Fort Bliss in west Texas for six to eight weeks of training, Wunn said.
