Newton bowling splits with Pella

PELLA — Finishing up the duals of the 2019-20 regular season, Newton High’s Cardinal bowling teams earned a split against the hosting Pella Little Dutch and Lady Dutch teams on Saturday.

Newton competed for the second week in a row on the lanes of the Excit-A-Bowl in Pella. The Cardinal girls posted a 2, 281-1,661 win over the Lady Dutch. The Cardinal boys allowed a 64-pin lead slip away to lose by 13 pins — 2,492-2,479 — to the Little Dutch.

Abby Price and Jenna Miller each had a 200-plus game for the Cardinal girls and Carter VanderSchel had a 234 game for the boys.

Price paced the girls with a 380 series with games of 210 and 170 while Miller had a 334 with games of 201 and 133. VanderSchel paired a 173 game with his 234 to lead the Cardinal boys with a 407.

Ashley Loehr rolled a 314 (154-160) for the girls with Bailey Hansen putting up a 290 (154-136). Sydni Followill had a 282 (127-155) and Gabby Pickerell had a 252 (128-124). Newton girls’ Baker Games scores were 136, 123, 138, 156 and 128.

Thomas Hodnett bowled a 339 on games of 157 and 182 as the second high score for the Cardinal boys. Nate Keith had a 328 (179-149) and Eli Ingle had a 307 (168-139).

Ben Zeien finished at 302 (169-133) and Even Benac had a 277 (142-135). The Cardinal boys had Baker Scores of 128, 157, 126, 190 and 195.

The Newton boys were leading Pella 1,683-1,619 after the individual games. Pella posted a 873 pin total in the rotation series to Newton’s 796 to pull out the close win.

Newton and Pella will be competing in this Saturday’s Twin Rivers Bowling Conference meet at 10 a.m. in Norwalk.
