Cardinal bowling teams sweep past Pella Christian

PELLA — Racking up victories on the opposition’s home lanes, Newton High’s Cardinal bowling teams swept a dual with Pella Christian’s Eagles on Saturday at Pella’s Excit-A-Bowl.

The Cardinal boys pushed for a 162-pin lead at the end of the individual series competition. Pella Christian made a bid in the Baker Games but Newton held steady despite the Eagles cutting into the margin.

Newton’s boys won 2,474-2,361. The Eagles combined for an 834 pin count in the rotation series to the Cardinals’ 785 count.

The Cardinal girls were in command of their dual with Pella Christian, leading 1,435-1,106 heading into the Baker Games.

They posted a 2,184-1,717 victory over the Eagles.

Carter VanderSchel paced the Cardinal boys with a 391 on games of 221 and 170. Nate Keith rolled a 349 (165-184) and Evan Benac had a 325 (143-182).

Ben Zeien had a 313 (149-164) followed by Eli Ingle’s 311 (163-148) and Thomas Hodnett’s 278 (147-131). Newton’s Baker Games scores were 167, 145, 133, 155 and 185.

Leading the way for the Cardinal girls was Abby Price with a 344 (170-174). Bailey Hansen bowled a 288 (159-129) and Ashley Loehr had a 285 (126-159).

Jenna Miller came through with a 264 (128-136) and Sydnie Followill had a 254 (110-144). Jillian Waits had a 200 (117-83). The Cardinals had Baker Games scores of 175, 135, 148, 150 and 142.

Newton’s boys won the junior varsity dual 1,839-1,799 led by Tyler Padgett’s 303. Logan Bown and Alex Wolfe each had a 276 and Ryan Hammen had a 190.

In the girls’ junior varsity dual, Pella Christian won 1,354-1,297. Deborah Durant rolled a 203 to lead Newton followed by Kyla Sutton with a 190, Abby Hobbs with a 178 and Haylee Danley-Metz with a 164.

Newton has one more dual remaining, a rescheduled meet against Pella. The Cardinal teams return to Excit-A-Bowl at noon on Saturday in Pella.

The Cardinals have the Twin Rivers Conference meet on Feb. 15 at Norwalk with a Class 2A state qualifying meet set for Feb.18 in Ottumwa.
