The school board will learn Monday night how Newton Community School District fares against other schools in the state.

Information from the updated Iowa School Performance Profiles (ISPP) will be released by NCSD Superintendent Bob Callaghan during the school board 6:30 p.m. meeting at E.J.H. Beard Administration Center.

The ISPP is the latest iteration of school performance measures in Iowa that replaces the Iowa School Report Card in spring 2019, the Des Moines Register’s Mackenzie Ryan reported in December 2018.

This system meets standards or requirements by the Every Students Succeeds Act, the federal education law that replaced No Child Left Behind.

Newton’s ISPP information will be distributed during the superintendent’s report.

In other action, the school board will:

• Hold a discussion item surrounding a district culture update. NCSD Board of Education President Robyn Friedman and board member Travis Padget will be presenting this information — likely touching on culture within the Newton school district’s campuses — to the board, but no action will be taken on the matter.

• Continue reviewing the second and first readings of policies. School board members will discuss and vote on two separate sets of policy. Afterward, NCSD Board of Education Vice-President Cody Muhs will lead a discussion on the school board protocol handbook, which was touched on at a previous work session.

• Bret Miller, the director of teaching and learning, will lead a District Instructional Leadership Team presentation alongside Ann Nelson and DILT Representatives. He will then pivot to a discussion item about a report from the Jan. 15 School Improvement Advisory Committee meeting. Afterward, the school board will consider setting a public hearing for the SIAC-recommended 2020-2021 school district calendar. The public hearing is proposed to be set at 6:45 p.m. Feb. 10.
