Hawk squads net SICL wins

SULLY — All caught up are Lynnville-Sully’s basketball teams. The Hawk squads hosted Iowa Valley’s teams in a South Iowa Cedar League conference doubleheader on Monday. The games were postponed from Friday.

Lynnville-Sully’s girls held the Iowa Valley girls to single-digit scoring in the final three quarters en route to a 55-32 win. The Hawks were up 12-10 after one quarter and in control of a 21-16 halftime lead then outscored the Tigers 34-16 in the second half.

The Hawk boys got the job done at home, beating Iowa Valley 56-49. They cashed in on 14-of-23 free throw attempts to the Tigers’ 5-of-7 from the line.

Lynnville-Sully’s girls are 10-3 overall and 8-2 in SICL play. The Lynnville-Sully boys improved to 5-7 overall and 4-6 in conference action.

“We started out slow in the first half, we didn’t have any defensive rotation,” Hawk girls’ head coach Jerry Hulsing said. “The second half was better. We did a better job of communicating on defense and rotating to stop the ball. We need to work on our rebounding and making it a priority.”

Mallory Loftus led the Hawks with 19 points. Korinne Jansen had a double-double with 10 points and 10 rebounds.

Cally Gibbs added 10 points and three assists. Krystal Van Dyke grabbed 15 rebounds and had eight points.

The Hawk girls shot 42 percent, 21-of-50, from the field and sank 12-of-24 free throw attempts. They had 41 rebounds and 19 turnovers.

Iowa Valley got 11 points from Taylor Smith and 10 point from Cassity Havens.

The Hawk boys were up 16-7 after one quarter and held a 28-21 halftime advantage. They outscored Iowa Valley 19-15 in the third period and the Tigers had a 13-9 scoring edge in the final stanza.

“The guys competed hard again tonight. We struggled to find a rhythm offensively, but we did enough on the defensive end and the boards,” L-S boys’ head coach Nick Harthoorn said.

Lynnville-Sully had a 38-37 rebounding edge led by Zane Fraker with eight boards. The Hawks had 10 steals and 15 turnovers while the Tigers had 18 turnovers.

Kinnick McFarland scored 22 points and had seven rebounds, three assists and three steals for the Hawks. Bray Noun Harder had 18 points, seven rebounds, three steals and two assists.

Brody Ward led Iowa Valley with 16 points and 10 rebounds.

Lynnville-Sully’s teams are on the road Tuesday, traveling to Sigourney. The SICL doubleheader starts at 6 p.m. with the girls’ varsity game followed by the boys’ game.
