Cardinals fall off pace against Indianola

INDIANOLA — Following a close first quarter of play, Newton High’s Cardinal boys weren’t able to keep pace with Indianola’s Indians Thursday night.

In a Little Hawkeye Conference game slated for Friday but moved to Thursday in anticipation of the winter weather moving into the state, the Indians powered to an 86-49 victory.

The Indians had the hot hand from the field, shooting 69 percent (36-of-52)overall while the Cardinals shot 45 percent (20-of-44).

The two teams combined for 38 3-point field goal attempts in the contest.

Indianola fired in 10 3-pointers against the Cardinals’ five. Newton was 5-of-17 from long range.

Newton trailed by three points, 16-13, after one quarter but couldn’t make enough defensive stops. The Indians, who are co-leaders atop the LHC at 5-1, extended their lead to 41-26 by halftime.

It was an even contest in the third quarter with Indianola holding a 20-19 scoring edge over Newton. Then it was all Indians in the fourth period as they poured in 25 points while holding the Cardinals to four points.

Sophomore Noah Allen had 15 points to lead Newton, hitting two 3-pointers. Adam Mattes, another sophomore, added 11 points and senior Kyle Long netted three 3-pointers for nine points. Newton was 4-of-6 at the free-throw line.

Senior Quintrail Coley pulled down six of the team’s 18 rebounds and had four assists. Senior Kaleb Dydell had four rebounds and four points.

Indianola (8-2) had four players score in double figures, led by Cade Rehmeier’s 20 points.

Rehmeier had two 3-pointers but Tyce Johnson connected on five from long range as he had 19 points.

A.J. Toigo scored 15 points while Luke Youmans had 12 points.

The Indians were 4-of-5 at the line. They had 23 rebounds, 19 assists and 11 steals.

Newton is 3-7 overall and 2-5 in conference play. It plays a non-conference game at 7:45 p.m. Tuesday at Boone.
