C-M girls lose to ranked SICL foes

COLFAX — Long-time Lynnville-Sully girls’ assistant basketball coach Jeff Corbett was thrust into the head coaching role on Dec. 3 in the Hawks’ conference opener against Colfax-Mingo.

And Class 1A No. 10 Lynnville-Sully responded with one of its best offensive performances in the last several seasons.

The Hawks made nearly half of their shots from the floor, buried 10 3-pointers and turned the ball over only eight times during an 83-34 road victory over the Tigerhawks in South Iowa Cedar League action.

“We know they are a tough team. But it’s still frustrating,” Warrick said. “No one feels good after an effort like that. I hope it’s a motivator.”

The 83 points scored was the most for the Hawks in more than a decade, according to scores posted on quikstatsiowa.com from 2006-07 until this season.

Lynnville-Sully’s top two players — senior Mallory Loftus and junior Krystal Van Dyke — combined for 39 points but the rest of the Hawks were solid on the offensive end of the floor, too.

L-S led 21-11 after one quarter and held a 45-19 advantage at halftime. Colfax-Mingo coach Blake Warrick knows his team has a lot of work to do.

Sophomore Avery Rague was a bright spot for the Tigerhawks (0-2 overall, 0-1 in SICL play). Her bucket and free throw tied the game at 3-all early and she added a pair of 3-pointers in the first quarter.

But Loftus and Van Dyke combined to score 12 of the Hawks’ 21 in the first quarter to give the visitors an early lead.

Rague added another bucket early in the second quarter. Eleven of her team-high 13 points came in the first 10 minutes of the game. McFarland scored all six of her points for L-S in the second period and Van Dyke and Loftus continued to dominate inside as the Hawks went up 26 at halftime.

“It’s a good chance to see where we are at. We found out tonight and we didn’t enjoy it,” Warrick said.

L-S outscored C-M 20-12 in the third and the bench did most of the work in an 18-3 fourth quarter.

The Tigerhawks got six points, four rebounds and three blocks from junior Brennan Rhone and five points and five rebounds from sophomore Melany Vry. Senior Abbey McConeghey also grabbed five boards, but the Tigerhawks turned it over 22 times and connected on only 29 percent from the floor.

“They out-rebounded us by a lot. We didn’t block out,” Warrick said. “They are bigger, but we need to be more aggressiveness. It wasn’t there tonight.”

The Tigerhawks played at BGM and host fifth-ranked North Mahaska at 6 p.m. on Dec. 13 in Colfax.

Montezuma 56, Colfax-Mingo 25

COLFAX — Colfax-Mingo dropped to 0-3 on the season and 0-2 in the South Iowa Cedar League team following a 56-25 home loss to Class 1A No. 1 Montezuma on Dec. 6.

Freshman Carley Underwood finished with six points and two rebounds, Rague added five points and sophomore Vry chipped in four points and four rebounds for the Tigerhawks. McConeghey pulled down six rebounds.

Montezuma (4-0 overall, 2-0 in the SICL) led 21-1 after one quarter. It was 41-10 at halftime. The Bravettes are defeating teams by an average of 21 points per game so far this season.
