Nine Hawks receive Class A District 8 honors

Lynnville-Sully senior Kinnick McFarland stepped in as quarterback for the Hawks when senior Bray Noun Harder suffered a season-ending injury. His versatility earned him the offensive utility position spot on the 2019 Class A District 8 All-District football team.

Noun Harder was the district coaches’ selection of the Gold Award, which is given to a player who is injured during the season and wasn’t able to finish in competition. Noun Harder was 9-of-20 for 161 yards passing with two TD passes.

McFarland also was selected as the District 8 punter. He punted 32 times for 1,182 yards. He finished with a 36.9-yard per punt average to lead the district. McFarland’s longest punt went 59 yards.

Lynnville-Sully’s Hawks went 1-8 for the season and finished fourth in the district at 1-3. Central Decatur (5-5) was the Class A District 8 champion at 4-0, advancing to the playoffs.

Wayne was 6-3 overall and 3-1 for second in the district and Martensdale-St. Marys (5-4) was 2-2 for third. North Mahaska was fifth at 0-4 in district play and 0-8 overall.

The Hawks had five players earn Class A District 8 All-District first-team honors. Along with McFarland were senior running back Ethan Wyma, senior tight end Zane Fraker and junior lineman Payton Van Wyk on offense and senior linebacker Slater Young on defense.

Three Lynnville-Sully players received honorable mention honors from the district coaches. Offensive lineman Mason Rodibaugh, a sophomore, and defensive lineman Chance Stock, a sophomore, and junior defensive back Kodie Waggoner.

McFarland moved from starting wide receiver to quarterback when Noun Harder was injured after two games. McFarland shared quarterback duties throughout out the rest of the season with freshman Conner Matson. He was 18-of-51 for 370 yards with two TD passes and seven interceptions.

McFarland caught 10 passes for 139 yards and one TD. He rushed for 196 yards on 61 carries and had three rushing touchdowns. He also had an 87-yard kickoff return for a touchdown.

As a first-team running back, Wyma led the Hawks with 543 yards on 149 carries with one touchdown. He was fourth in the district in rushing. He had an 80-yard kickoff return for a touchdown.

Fraker was the District 8 first-team tight end. Fraker was Lynnville-Sully’s leading receiver with 13 catches for 253 yards, a 19.5-yard per catch average. He was ninth among district receivers. Fraker had three TD catches. He rushed for 95 yards on 10 carries.

Young led the Hawks’ defense as a first-team all-district linebacker. He was third among district players with 38 solo tackles, finishing with 53.5 tackles overall. He had 10 tackles for loss and four solo quarterback sacks.

Van Wyk was a starting offensive lineman for Lynnville-Sully earning first-team honors. Rodibaugh was an honorable mention offensive lineman.

Stock earned honorable mention as a defensive lineman for the Hawks. He had 17 solo tackles and 11 assisted tackles. He had four tackles for loss and one sack. Waggoner is an honorable mention defensive back with nine solo tackles, seven assisted tackles and two interceptions.
