Baxter's Berg finishes second at DN-H

DIKE — Baxter’s Logan Berg reached another goal on Oct. 8, breaking the 17-minute barrier for a 5K run.

Berg, a senior who is ranked 10th in Class 1A, finished second at the Wolverine Invitational. His runner-up time was clocked at 16 minutes, 56 seconds. Class 2A No. 6 Lake LeBahn of Union won the race in 16:14.

There were six ranked teams and nine ranked runners in the girls’ 5K race. The boys’ race featured two ranked teams and three ranked runners. The meet was hosted by Dike-New Hartford at Fox Ridge Golf Course.

Baxter’s boys did not have enough runners for a team score for the first time this year. After Berg came junior Sean Finch in 107th with a time of 20:10. Senior Will Hitchler finished 123rd in 20:46.

Junior Kailee Conradi led the Baxter girls as she was 54th in 22:08. The Bolts were 15th in the 19-team field with 407 points.

Senior Holly Jessen (22:42) finished 70th, sophomore Lilie Vansice (23:21) came in 85th, senior Maya Phelps (23:50) was 100th and senior Bryn Schultheis (27:28) ended up 132nd.

Class 1A No. 3 Aplington-Parkersburg won the girls’ team title with 90 points, led by race champion and second-ranked Sophia Jungling. Class 3A No. 8 Charles City (112), 1A No. 2 Denver (116), 1A No. 7 Hudson (138) and 2A No. 6 Starmont (144) completed the top five. Class 2A No. 13 Dike-New Hartford also was in the field.

Jungling (18:28) edged Class 3A No. 11 Ellie Meyer (18:29) of IFA/AGWSR by one second for the win.

Class 1A No. 10 Denver won the boys’ team title with 61 points. Grundy Center/Gladbrook-Reinbeck, who is a “team to watch” in 2A, was second with 110 points, followed by Charles City (112), 2A No. 15 Union (168) and Starmont (203). There were 21 boys teams.

The Iowa Star Conference cross country meet is at Wartburg College at 4:30 p.m. on Oct. 17 in Waverly.
