Four Newton harriers medal in Osky Invite

OSKALOOSA — In a tight race, Newton High’s Cardinal boys placed three in the top 20 to claim medals at Tuesday’s Oskaloosa Invitational. Newton’s boys finished fifth with 110 points as a team in an 11-team field.

Treycen Garton claimed the sixth-place medal in running the 5K course in 18 minutes, 35.4 seconds. Jackson Mace-Maynard was ninth in 18:57.5. Brennan Amos nabbed the 13th-place medal in 19:09.7.

Ashay Malow was the lone medal winner for the Newton girls.

Malow ran 10th in 22:17.3. The Cardinal girls were seventh with 206 points in the 13-team field.

Williamsburg swept the team titles, winning the girls’ division with 48 points followed by Ottumwa with 51 and Grinnell in third with 55 points.

Williamsburg’s boys took the top spot with 84 points. Albia was second with 86 points followed by Grinnell with 87 and Ottumwa with 89.

Ottumwa’s Alli Bookin-Nosbisch and Grace Bookin-Nosbisch were first and second in the girls’ varsity race in 19:58.7 and 20:42.8. Davis County’s Kenny Cronin posted a winning time of 17:24.9 in the boys’ varsity race.

“The guys ran very competitively with some solid cross country teams. The hills always psych out the guys so I was pleased to see it not affect them in the race,” Newton boys’ head coach Steve Weeks said. “I am pleased with the improvements and are closing in on Little Hawkeye Conference teams which should make for a very tight race when all eight teams race together next month.”

Newton girls’ head coach Rachelle Tipton said given the hills, heat, and not focusing on times, the Cardinal girls still saw some times similar to or faster than last week and times faster than on this course last year.

“Ashay was running right up there with ranked 3A and 2A girls. She had a great race and this should keep her confidence up,” Tipton said. “Morgan (Stalzer) looked strong tonight and saw a big improvement over this meet last year. It’s great to see her making those strides.”

The Newton teams prepare for their annual Cardinal Invitational on Tuesday. Races begin at 4 p.m. at Westwood Golf Course in Newton.
