Marvin Oppedal passed away Saturday, morning, Sept. 14, 2019, at his home in Newton.

A time of remembrance, celebration and visitation will be from 12:30 to 1:45 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 19, an hour prior to a graveside service at the Pence-Reese Funeral Home in Newton, who has been entrusted with the arrangements. Burial and graveside services will be at 2 p.m. Thursday afternoon, Sept. 19 in the Veteran’s Section, at Newton Union Cemetery. In lieu of flowers memorials may be designated to Marvin’s family, with donations to Mantle Cell Lymphoma – Lymphoma Research Foundation.

Marvin Lee Oppedal, 75, the son of Ludvig A. and Blanche B. (Matheason) Oppedal, was born Sept. 2, 1944, in Webster City. He was a graduate of the Randall-South Hamilton High School, Class of 1962. He had served his country with the U.S. Army during the Vietnam War, 1966-1968.

On Aug. 1, 1997, Marvin was united in marriage with Jo Ann Edwards-Berry in Newton. He was employed by Black Hills Energy as a senior manager, retiring in 2011. He was a member of the Newton First United Methodist Church, where he had served in several capacities, a member of the American Legion and Life Member of the V.F.W. He enjoyed the outdoors, fishing, woodworking, camping, boating and spending time with his family.

Marvin is survived by his wife, Jo Ann Berry-Oppedal; daughter, Melissa Berry (Andrew Main) of Newton; son, Chad Berry of Newton; his five grandchildren, Evie, Grayson, Trayton, Bladen and Austin; his sister, Marilyn (Jeff) Hill of Jewel; and many good neighbors and friends.

Marvin was preceded in death by his parents.
