Demolition Derby smashing into Colfax Saturday

Central Iowa’s largest demolition derby will be smashing back into Colfax on Saturday. Carnage lovers in Jasper County can get their fill for the year while staying close to home starting at 7 p.m. at the Jasper County Fairgrounds in Colfax.

“The organizers were big on this is an event for the community ... We have scaled back on the advertising a little bit more to try and keep the crowd a little bit more manageable,” organizer Brad Magg said. “It has grown to be such an annual event that it really just kind of sells itself and people mark their calendars without even seeing posters.”

The popular event draws large crowds each year and is a prime example of a time for Jasper County residents to come out and have a good time. In its 11th year, the organizers have found what works at the demo derby and are sticking with it.

“We are trying to keep it ‘if it ain’t broke don’t fix it’ kind of mentality ... We are just trying to make sure everyone has a good time,” Magg said.

The demo derby will have no rule changes from last year. Big cars that exceed the light weld rules will have a $50 entry fee and have a 60/40 split paying out first and second place. Small cars that exceed the light weld rules will have a $30 entry fee with a guaranteed $300 payout plus a 60/40 split paying out first and second place. A full break down of the rules are on the derby’s Facebook page.

Any kids ages three to eight years old interested in participating in the Power Wheels Derby can sign up on the derby’s Facebook page. The first 20 kids will be accepted. Kids need to bring a helmet and passengers are allowed during the derby. Waivers will be on hand for parents to sign the day of the event.

The admission prices will be $10 for adults and $3 for children ages 4-12 with kids three and under free. If you would like to be closer to the action you can purchase a pit pass for $20.

One area the demo derby is seeing thin out is volunteers. Magg said they are stretched thinner this year and to put on an event like the demo derby, it takes a lot of people working together.

“We have lost several of our key volunteers this year ... If anybody is interested in getting involved to help keep the demolition derby going please reach out to our Facebook page,” Magg.

Even with the lighter numbers, Magg expects the demo derby to be full of the same entertainment it has the past 10 years, bringing an evening of action and excitement to all those who come out to Colfax.

“Expect the same great time they have had the last several years and we are looking forward to getting smashed in Colfax,” Magg said.
