Newton Nite Hawks still alive in MFL title chase

DES MOINES — The Newton Nite Hawks, a semi-professional football team, will play for the Midwest Football League Western Conference championship on Saturday.

The Nite Hawks (10-1) are scheduled to play the Northwest Iowa Bulldogs (9-2) at 5 p.m. Saturday at 2301 S.W. 30th St. in Des Moines, according to team co-owner Mark Mackerman. The two team faced off in Week 2 of the regular season with Newton winning 32-20.

Admission is $7 per person with children 12 and under admitted free. The gates open at 4 p.m.

Newton beat East Iowa Storm 42-0 in to win the Southwest Division playoff game. Northwest Iowa Bulldogs won the Northwest Division playoff game, 34-0, against the North Iowa Knights.

Mackerman said the winner of Saturday’s game plays against the winner of the MFL Eastern Conference game between Midwest Titans or Missouri Ravens in Kansas City, Mo., in the MFL Championship Game on Aug. 24.

Mackerman and Gordon Head are the two owners of the Newton Nite Hawks and both are players for the team. According to the MFL website Josh Christensen is the team’s head coach and David Woods is the team’s defensive coordinator.
