Member of school board sworn in for 2019-20

Board secretary, treasurer takes oath to continue serving

Deb Hodgson was confirmed to continue as the treasurer and secretary for the Colfax-Mingo School Board through the 2019-20 school year during its regular July meeting Monday. The board unanimously approved Hodgson to the positions and she repeated the oath from superintendent Erik Anderson.

“It is a privilege to continue to serve and it is an exciting time, there isn’t ever a dull moment in the school environment,” Hodgson said

Anderson told the board how well Hodgson has done her job with the school and that it was the best decision to keep her in that position moving forward.

“She has helped us through some difficult times,” Anderson said. “Everybody in the state went through some difficult times with funding and she has helped us and were are in a pretty good position right now. She has done her job.”

During the superintendent report it was discussed moving forward for transportation for preschool students. A midday route at a cost of about $70 per day was discussed as an option. Should the route take more than one hour per day, it would need to be split into two routes, increasing the cost. Per year, should the board more forward with the routes, a single route would be $10,000 each year with the amount doubling to $20,000 for two routes.

“So it wouldn’t necessarily be about the number of kids maybe just about where they are at within our district,” Anderson said.

Elementary principal Brian Summy said he has heard from a lot of families who are “pretty excited” about the transportation option.

In other business:

• A time line was discussed on the HVAC unit that is being replaced. To ease any conflict, the contractors will try to align the installation with the school sports schedules. The board also discussed keeping some the parts from the old unit, as well, to use throughout the district.

• A summer strength coach position was discussed and approved for the district. The position will be able to provide the opportunity for athletes to be in the weight room during the summer with a staff member that is knowledgeable on techniques and preferred practices. Erin Hume was hired for the role. The board also approved a nutritionist for the district.
